USDOL Issues Rule Aimed at Diversifying Apprenticeship Hiring

On December 19, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) issued a final rule that updates equal employment opportunity requirements for registered apprenticeship programs. The final rule extends current protections against discrimination to include disability, age (40 years or older), genetic information and sexual orientation. The regulation takes effect on January 18, 2017, but allows for phased-in compliance beyond that date; for example, 180 days to come into compliance with the new non-discrimination protections, and up to two years for obligations related to Affirmative Action Programs (AAPs) . For the full text of the final rule, go to the Office of Apprenticeship’s EEO website.
