Privacy Training Required for Federal Contractors’ Employees Handling PII

Effective January 19, 2017, federal contractors whose employees handle personally identifiable information (PII) or have access to records containing such information must ensure that these employees complete privacy training. The Department of Defense (DoD), General Services Administration (GSA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) amended the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) to require the privacy training initially and annually. The final rule allows the contractor to utilize privacy training from any source that meets the minimum content requirements, unless the agency specifies in the contract that only agency-provided training is acceptable.
